9 people, including 7 Georgians, detained in Italy for labor exploitation of Georgian citizens

The Crotone State Police executed, between the provinces of Crotone and Catanzaro, a precautionary order issued by the Court at the request of the Anti-Mafia Directorate, against 9 individuals, 7 of Georgian nationality and 2 Italian, on the basis of the presumed existence of serious circumstantial evidence regarding participation in an association aimed at committing numerous crimes of aiding and abetting the entry and permanence on the territory of the State of numerous Georgian citizens aimed at recruiting manpower to be assigned to 3rd parties in conditions of personal exploitation, writes La Milano.

The precautionary measure incorporates the findings of a complex investigation activity, started in July 2022 which led to the identification, in the preliminary investigation phase and susceptible to verification in the adversarial proceedings of the parties, of a stable organizational structure with an Italian individual at the top, who coordinated the activity through 3 women of Georgian nationality who had the task of hooking up, also through actual advertisements on the most popular social networks, Georgian women by promising them work in Italy in exchange for a price for the intermediation paid directly by the foreign worker to the criminal organization, all in violation of immigration legislation.

The investigations have allowed to identify the other individuals, who were responsible for taking the women from Georgia to Italy, also accompanying them to some homes in the municipalities of Botricello and Cutro, so-called "safe houses" available to the gang or directly to the employers, who in turn made use of the work services by evading any form of contract.

With the precautionary measure, in addition to the personal measures (4 prison detentions and 5 house arrests), the preventive seizure of 4 properties was also ordered [in the municipalities of Botricello and Cutro], used by the criminal association as a logistical base where women from outside could stay while waiting for job placement. The search is underway for 3 of the suspects who are the recipients of precautionary measures and identified outside the borders.
