Today, Zaza Gogava and Mamuka Kurashvili will appear before the parliamentary investigative commission. The United National Movement [UNM] recently released information on this issue, stating that Generals Gogava and Kurashvili have resigned from their party positions and consider themselves obliged to answer any questions regarding the war, in any format.
"The so-called parliamentary commission, created by the Ivanishvili regime, continues to serve the interests of occupying Russia. Despite claims from the illegitimate Georgian Dream`s parliament that no military personnel would be summoned, today`s session is set to interrogate Georgian military officers.
Bidzina Ivanishvili`s regime has decided to question General Zaza Gogava, Chief of the Joint Staff in 2008, and General Mamuka Kurashvili, Chief of the Peacekeeping Operations Staff in 2008.
"Generals Gogava and Kurashvili played a crucial role in containing Russian aggression in 2008 and preserving Georgia`s statehood alongside President Saakashvili and our heroic fighters. This is why the 2008 Supreme Commander-in-Chief, President Saakashvili, remains imprisoned at Russia`s behest and why the generals continue to face persecution from the Russian Federation.
Georgia prevailed over Russia, and Putin`s falsehoods about the August War were debunked - first by the European Court of Human Rights on January 21, 2021, and later by the International Criminal Court on June 30, 2022. These victories were achieved because Generals Gogava and Kurashvili defended the truth with the highest expertise and integrity. Georgian Dream seeks to overturn this victory by rewriting history to align with the occupier`s narrative - blaming Georgia and its military for the 2008 war while justifying the aggressor. This is the real motive behind their so-called `restoring justice’ campaign, which aims to undermine the decisions of the world`s top courts.
At the UNM’s Political Council session on February 18, 2025, Generals Gogava and Kurashvili reaffirmed their duty to the Georgian state and the memory of fallen heroes. They declared their readiness to answer any questions about the 2008 war, even before an illegitimate parliament. At the same session, they resigned from all party positions, as the broader opposition stance opposes political participation in the Russian-controlled commission. Their testimony is not about legitimizing political theatre but about upholding the truth.
The generals will appear before the commission without any party affiliation. Together, we will defend Georgia against those serving the occupier`s interests", - reads the statement.
