The Prime Minister of Georgia extended his gratitude to the Georgian foreign office for “constantly” working to ensure that the resolution on Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia regions enjoyed “broad” support in the United Nations.

“The number of supporters of the UN resolution is increasing year after year. Special thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for this, which is constantly working to ensure that the resolution related to IDPs has broad support.

Last year, for the first time, we achieved triple-digit support for a resolution, and this year we had a record number of 103 countries supporting our resolution. This is a special merit of the Foreign Ministry and thanks to the [Foreign] Minister for the work done by the Ministry, [thanks] to each diplomat who did everything. Thanks to China for maintaining its position”, - said Irakli Kobakhidze.

The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the resolution on the status of IDPs and Refugees from Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia. The document expressed concern over forced demographic changes resulting from the conflicts in Georgia and the humanitarian situation caused by 2008 war, which had resulted in the further forced displacement of civilians.
