Adoption of this law has already brought significant damage to this process as a whole, so today it is possible that the Parliament refuses to override this veto. Such a statement made today the Public Defender of Georgia, while talking about the draft law “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”.

“The reason and purpose of my coming here is only one - to once again express, voice the position of the Ombudsman regarding the Law on Transparency.

I came also because the situation and tension that exists in the country today require more responsibility and because of everything that has been going on in the streets of Tbilisi for almost 2 months now. The goal of this law is to establish a higher standard regarding the transparency of funds received from a foreign country in Georgia.

We believe that this goal is legitimate, although it was possible to achieve this goal and it is still possible to introduce changes in the existing legislation that ensure the achievement of this goal. The adoption of this law in this form, in my opinion, has already brought significant damage to this process as a whole, so today it is possible that the Parliament refuses to override this veto at tomorrow’s session.

This law has both supporters and many opponents, but the Government always has a special responsibility. Often, in my opinion, retreating can be a sign of strength rather than weakness. I urge you not to override the President’s veto of this law at tomorrow’s session”, - said Levan Ioseliani.
