Ukraine’s pressure on Georgia to send volunteers was a violation of international law. However, it seems that some people only remember the laws when it concerns not other people, but their own children - Papuashvili

Ukraine’s pressure on Georgia to send volunteers was a violation of international law. However, it seems that some people only remember the laws when it concerns not other people, but their own children, writes the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament on the social network.

“In February 2022, only a few days in war, foreign minister Kuleba was pressuring Georgian Government to officially send volunteers, risking Georgia’s opening the second front. When Georgian Government rejected such unlawful action, Kuleba summoned the Ukrainian ambassador from Tbilisi to Kyiv, trying to cause split between the Georgian Government and people. Georgia was the only country, which was formally demanded to send volunteers.

Now, Kuleba is meticulously reading out the articles of Ukrainian law, discussing if his own son can join the armed forces and fight.

Three years ago, disregarding international law was easy, so that to drag Georgia into the war. As Ukrainian secretary of national security Danilov then said, Georgians’ opening of the second front would help Ukraine. But now, when it comes to Kuleba’s own family, every hair must be split in the name of the law”, - writes Shalva Papuashvili.

His comment comes after the statement of the Ukraine’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dmytro Kuleba stated that he had to convince his 18-year-old son not to go to war: “He is attending military courses, and I did everything possible to convince him to continue his studies at university for now. I will respect his choice if he decides to go to fight. This is not something to aspire to, but if your Time comes, you must meet it with dignity”.

He also expressed his opinion on the possible lowering of the conscription age, stating that this is unlikely to happen before the age of 18: “I think it will not be that dramatic. I see no reason why the conscription age should drop down to 18 years. A partial reduction of the age threshold by 1-2 years is more likely. This is an argument that generals should pass to political leadership and parliament. Most importantly, it affects the people of Ukraine. This will be a very painful decision, which will not receive support from Ukrainian society”.
