Non-governmental organizations [NGOs] defending those detained during protests spoke about the facts of rights violations at court proceedings.
“We have this information based on the fact that lawyers of 11 NGOs coordinately help detained, tortured, beaten citizens both in detention centers and in court. We are present at the court proceedings and the results of our observation are based on the mentioned conclusions.
According to the data, information about the arrest of more than 460 persons was received on the hotline of NGOs. Of these, 430 are detained under the administrative rule, and 36 under the criminal law rule. It is possible that the number of arrests is higher because it is not based on official information.
After November 28, the rights of more than 460 detainees were violated both in investigative bodies and in courtrooms. The judges did not take into account the evidence presented by the defense and relied only on the policemen’s, in most cases, false statements. They fined citizens from 2,000 to 3,000 GEL without justification. Also, without any basis and evidence, they kept them in custody from 4 to 12 days”, - said Nino Lomjaria, the founder of civil platform "European Orbit of Georgia.
