From the very start of the war, Georgia has demonstrated full solidarity with Ukraine through strong political and diplomatic steps – Kobakhidze

From the very start of the war, Georgia has demonstrated full solidarity with Ukraine through strong political and diplomatic steps, said the Prime Minister of Georgian in his speech at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin.

“Ladies and Gentlemen,

First of all, I would like to thank Germany for hosting this important conference.

As we gather here today to reiterate our unwavering solidarity with Ukraine in these challenging times and our commitment to its swift recovery, let me underscore that Georgia and Ukraine are interlinked by a centuries-long friendship and strong people-to-people ties.

Georgia firmly supports Ukraine"s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

We understand that while we are united in our resolve to substantially assist Ukraine in its reconstruction, our resources may vary. This should inspire us to extend as much support as possible within our capacities.

With this in mind, from the very start of the war, Georgia has demonstrated full solidarity with Ukraine through strong political and diplomatic steps, both bilaterally and on international platforms, as well as by offering substantial humanitarian assistance.

Overall, Georgia has sponsored, joined, and supported more than 600 resolutions, statements, joint statements, and other initiatives adopted or proposed by international organizations and institutions in support of Ukraine.

While Georgia has not introduced national sanctions against Russia following its military aggression against Ukraine, all relevant state agencies remain vigilant concerning sanctioned persons and goods. The Georgian government maintains close coordination with the European Union, Great Britain, the United States, and other states exercising control over the enforcement of sanctions.

At the same time, the Government of Georgia has provided significant humanitarian aid to Ukraine and supported Ukrainian citizens currently residing in Georgia. To date, more than 1,000 tons of humanitarian cargo have been sent to Ukraine, and the support provided by the Government of Georgia amounts to more than 35 million GEL. Georgia continues to assist approximately 26,000 Ukrainians affected by the war, who are currently living in Georgia.

Since 2022, Ukrainians who entered Georgia due to the ongoing war have been receiving financial assistance, mirroring the support given to IDPs from Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions.

Notably, the Georgian education system has enrolled over 2,300 Ukrainian students, most of whom are receiving general education in the Ukrainian language according to the standard Ukrainian curriculum.

Additionally, recognizing that children are among the most vulnerable to the devastating effects of war, we will host Ukrainian children in our youth camps this summer. Specifically, the children of servicemen from the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard residing in Kharkiv and Kyiv will participate in these camps. Accompanied by consenting guardians, these children will spend time in our regions, enjoying a safe and supportive environment.

Dear colleagues,

The Georgian and Ukrainian nations share not only similar experiences and strong bonds of friendship but also common aspirations for European integration. We believe that the Ukrainian people will soon achieve peace, and together we will celebrate full membership in the European Union.

Meanwhile, we will continue providing support within our available resources to aid Ukraine’s recovery”, - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
