Parliament of Georgia rejects “De-oligarchization law” in the 3rd reading

The Parliament of Georgia has decided not to pass the Draft Law on De-oligarchization after discussing it in the 3rd reading.

Anri Okhanashvili, the Chairman of the Legal Issues Committee, presented the draft law in the third reading at the plenary session, however, as he noted, the discussion was formal and he appealed to his colleagues not to support the draft during the voting.

The Georgian Dream cited the removal of the European Union’s request for such legislation as a reason for not pursuing it further. Instead, the ruling party intends to submit the draft of a de-oligarchization action plan to the Venice Commission for review by the end of the week.

The Chairman of the Georgian Dream made a statement on the same topic yesterday, September 18. According to Irakli Kobakhidze, the Georgian EU Integration Commission under the Government has already approved the project of De-oligarchization action plan, which will be finalized after consultations with the European Commission.

The draft action plan for de-oligarchization will be sent to the Venice Commission by the end of the week. Accordingly, under the conditions of approval of the action plan, the law on “De-oligarchization” adopted by the Parliament in 2 readings, lost its practical relevance.
