President’s visit to Brussels is counterproductive and confronts the interest of Georgia receiving candidate status - Kobakhidze

President’s visit to Brussels is counterproductive and confronts the interest of Georgia receiving candidate status. Such a statement made today the Chairman of the Georgian Dream.

“The Constitution clearly defines everything. It is clearly written in the Constitution that the President can only engage in the foreign policy tasks with the approval of the Government. This is especially true in the conditions when the positions of the President and the Government are radically different from each other.

The Government believes that Georgia deserved the candidate status last year and this year as well, and the President believes that Georgia deserved the candidate status neither last year nor this year.

If we look at it in practice - for example, if Charles Michel’s assistant gives him a piece of paper, which quotes Salome Zourabichvili about the fact that the Georgian Government does not fulfill the requirements of the EU, Michel will ask if what she said in the Georgian Parliament building was true or a lie.

Of course, Salome Zourabichvili cannot say that she lied in the Parliament in order to strengthen the radical opposition. She will have to say that Georgia does not meet the requirements and does not deserve the candidate status.

From this, it can be seen that the visit of the President to Brussels is counterproductive - it opposes the interest of the country’s candidate status.

Therefore, the Government’s refusal was not only legally, constitutionally supported, but also politically. Accordingly, we could not leave all this without reacting.

Western partners are certainly in an awkward position due to these actions of the President.

Of course, for foreign partners, this is largely an internal matter, it is a pity that Salome Zourabichvili puts our international partners in an awkward position, however, we should call on everyone to take into account the requirements of the Constitution of Georgia as much as possible. And everyone should act within the framework of our constitution”, - said Irakli Kobakhidze.
