In 2022, disinformation and propaganda campaigns were carried out in the wake of current issues in the country and the developments in the region, said the Deputy Head of the State Security Service of Georgia [SSSG] at the joint meeting of the defense and security, legal issues and human rights protection and civil integration committees, while presenting the 2022 report.

“In 2022, the hybrid threats directed against Georgia had a significant negative impact on the security environment. In many cases, covert so-called soft power operations, including cyber operations, as well as information warfare tools were used. Disinformation and propaganda campaigns were carried out following current issues in the country and developments in the region. Actors operating inside and outside the country were involved in this. The main goal of the mentioned campaigns was still to influence the foreign political course. There were attempts to damage Georgia’s relations with strategic partners and allies.

There was an active attempt to use the hostilities in Ukraine for their own political purposes. There were ongoing information campaigns aimed at deliberately misleading the public. Disinformation statements spread against the SSSG and the country’s security system in general were particularly acute, which actually aimed to harm the security environment in the country.

The persons and organizations participating in or contributing to the said activity were brought under control, their connections and funding sources were being revealed”, - said Aleksii Batiashvili.
