David Songhulashvili, as the head of the delegation of the Parliament of Georgia to the Parliamentary Assembly, delivered a welcome speech to the members of the Political Affairs Committee during the ongoing committee meetings of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly.

“Our country’s resolute and longstanding commitment lies with the European Union and NATO. I am confident that the significant strides we have made in this direction will be duly acknowledged and appreciated by our European partners. I firmly believe that Georgia will eventually join the European Union as a member state”, - said David Songhulashvili.

He emphasized Georgia’s aspirations to become an integral part of the European family and to hold a prominent position within it. During his speech, the head of the parliamentary delegation also highlighted the challenging global environment and the ongoing aggression by Russia in Ukraine: “The full-scale war initiated by Russia has had a profound impact on the foreign policy agenda. The security of our region, particularly Georgia, has been significantly affected, with over 20% of our territory occupied by Russia. Despite this heightened geopolitical situation, we remain steadfast in our commitment to pursuing European integration and will continue our efforts without interruption”.

Giorgi Kakhiani, a member of the delegation of the Parliament of Georgia, reviewed the process of transition from the presidential model to the parliamentary model on the example of Georgia.

“Over the past three decades, the government system in Georgia has undergone significant transformation, transitioning from a presidential to a parliamentary republic. Throughout this period, four constitutional reforms were implemented, shaping Georgia into a classic parliamentary-style country. Each constitutional reform was accompanied by intricate political processes, and it is worth noting that the majority of political groups in Georgia today support the establishment of a parliamentary republic”, - noted Giorgi Kakhian.
