22 in favor and 33 against - Parliament overrides President’s veto regarding the amendments to the “Election Code”

The Parliament of Georgia has overridden the President’s veto regarding the changes in the procedure for electing the chairman and members of the Central Election Commission.

The draft law proposed by Salome Zourabichvili was voted on and was supported by only 22 MPs. 33 members of the Parliament voted against.

After that, is passed by the Parliament in 3 readings and vetoed by the President was put to the vote, which was approved by the ruling majority with 78 votes [14 against].

According to the changes, the election competition for the Chairperson and members of the CEC shall be announced and the competition commission shall be created by the Chairman of the Parliament, instead of the President.

The participation of the President in the process of presenting candidacies for the chairmanship of the CEC and the membership of the CEC is envisaged if the legislature is not able to elect persons to the vacant positions in the very first try.

The Chairperson and members of the CEC shall be elected for a term of 5 years by the majority of the full composition of the Parliament.
