Producers, directors and actors converged on the red carpet in the French Riviera’s glamorous capital of cinema as the 76th Cannes Film Festival got underway, writes The New York Times.
The festival is hosting some big-name directors (Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson) and A-list stars (Leonardo DiCaprio, Natalie Portman), along with lesser-known filmmakers, as 21 movies compete for the top prize, the Palme d’Or.
Considered a hub for experimental cinema, Cannes also provides a stage for large studio vehicles: This year, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and a new Pixar movie, “Elemental,” will premiere at the festival.
Johnny Depp, the lead of the festival’s opening film, “Jeannette du Barry,” arrived just ahead of the opening ceremony, where the actor Michael Douglas receive an honorary Palme d’Or. “Jeanne du Barry,” a French costume drama, is Depp’s first major film since winning a bitter defamation trial last year, and its selection has been divisive.
