Parliament of Georgia elects Giorgi Kalandarishvili to the post of CEC Chairman

The Parliament of Georgia elected Giorgi Kalandarishvili to the post of Central Election Commission Chairman with 85 votes against 16 for a 5-year term of office.

Besides, 3 members of the CEC - Maia Zaridze, Giorgi Sharabidze and Gia Tsatsashvili were approved for the same term.

On the initiative of the ruling team, based on the changes implemented in the “Election Code” and the Parliament’s Regulations, the candidates for the chairman of the Central Election Commission and the members of the commission were selected by the competition commission created in the parliament, and the candidates were presented to the parliament by the Chairman of Parliament, instead of the president, as was the case before the legislative changes.

In August 2021 and February 2022, Giorgi Kalandarishvili was elected to the post of the Chairman of the Central Committee of the Central Committee for a period of only six months, because in order to hold the position for a five-year term, he was required by the so-called parliament. A qualified majority did not support it. After that, President Salome Zourabichvili did not submit Giorgi Kalandarishvili’s candidacy to the Parliament for the third term. Taking into account the mentioned factor, Georgian Dream made changes in the election legislation and appointed the chairman of the CEC and the so-called the procedure for choosing professional members has changed.
