The Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee convened to address the needs of individuals with Down syndrome in Georgia. Newly appointed Chairman, Rati Ionatamishvili, emphasized the significance of this topic and prioritized its discussion within the Committee’s meeting agenda.
“Today, on World Down Syndrome Day, I am honored to convene my inaugural meeting as the Chair of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee, coinciding with the celebration of this significant day on March 21st. Our primary objective is to safeguard the rights and welfare of individuals with Down syndrome”, - said Rati Ionatamishvili.
He emphasized the importance of raising society’s awareness about this issue and dispelling stereotypes that contribute to the formation of certain stigmas.
During the Committee meeting, reports were delivered by young individuals with Down syndrome: Levan Gotsadze, Sesili Gvinjilia, Mariam Berikelashvili, and Mariam Lomidze. Lia Tabatadze, the founder of the Down Syndrome Association of Georgia, also addressed the topic.
The session highlighted challenges related to education, employment, advocacy, and access to healthcare services. Rati Ionatamishvili stated that a relevant working group would be established in the committee to address the identified needs. As a gesture of appreciation, symbolic gifts were presented to the speakers. The Committee meeting was held in collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association of Georgia.
