Shalva Papuashvili meets with the Deputy Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Bjørn Berge

The Speaker of the Parliament held a meeting with the Deputy Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, Bjørn Berge.

During the meeting, Shalva Papuashvili expressed his gratitude to the Council of Europe for its long-standing support to Georgia across various domains. He highlighted the recent consolidated report by the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, which, for the first time, officially acknowledged the occupation of Georgian territories by using the term “occupation line”.

The Speaker also provided an overview of Georgia"s progress in implementing EU recommendations.

Bjørn Berge acknowledged the fruitful cooperation between the Council of Europe and Georgia. He positively assessed Georgia’s presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which prioritized human rights and environmental protection on the agenda.

Berge mentioned the approval of the fourth action plan of the Council of Europe for Georgia covering the period of 2024-2027. This plan aims to enhance support for Georgia’s European integration efforts. He reiterated the Council of Europe’s strong commitment to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
