Irakli Garibashvili at the World Economic Forum in Davos - the main messages of the Prime Minister

Prime Minister of Georgia met Robert Mærsk Uggla, Chairman of the Maersk Board of Directors today. Meeting held in Davos was focused on the performance of APM Terminals in Georgia and prospects of future cooperation.

Irakli Garibashvili reviewed the corporate dynamics with Robert Mærsk Uggla and discussed the concrete steps to be made in future. Focus of the meeting was made on the Middle Corridor positioning as an alternative route connecting Europe with Asia and its significance. As the Prime Minister of Georgia noted, the country is interested in the comprehensive functioning of the Middle Corridor and supports the promotion of the referred transport route in the international format.

The Prime Minister highlighted the increased volume of cargo crossing the Poti Port and noted that the total number of containers admitted to the referred harbor in 2023 has been increased by 65.7% in contrast with 2022.

The Danish company includes the following business segments under the brand name of Maersk: shipments, port operation, supply chain management and warehousing. Company was incorporated in Copenhagen. It owns daughter companies and offices in 130 countries and operates under the subsidiary of APM Terminals in Georgia. Maersk employs over 100 000 people worldwide. Corporate revenues amount 81.5 BLN USD. Forbes Global listed Maersk at 174th position among 2000 largest public companies in 2023. It is one of the largest shipping companies worldwide and has the biggest fleet and capacity globally.

Besides, Georgian Prime Minister met with Jasim Husain Ahmed Thabet, CEO of TAQA. The topics discussed at the meeting included the country’s energy potential and opportunities for enhancing the company’s investments in Georgia.

Jasim Husain Ahmed Thabet briefed Irakli Garibashvili on the key directions and priorities of the company’s operations. For his part, the Prime Minister provided information about the country’s favorable investment environment. As Irakli Garibashvili noted, developing renewable energy is one of the priority directions of Georgia"s economic policy.

Attention was paid to the Black Sea Submarine Cable project, on which the Government of Georgia is actively working together with its partners.

The Head of Government invited the TAQA Executive to Georgia, to better familiarize himself with the country"s investment potential.

Established in 2005, TAQA a diversified energy company of the United Arab Emirates. It plays an important role in the implementation of the economic strategy of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The company generates a significant share of electric power and water and owns assets in various countries, such as the US, the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, the UAE, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and others. The company’s revenues in the first half of 2023 made up about 3.67 billion USD. TAQA owns 43% of the shares of Masdar, a large UAE energy company developing a 100-MW solar power plant in Georgia.
