The President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, signed the amendments to the Broadcasting Law. The changes were adopted by the Parliament with 79 votes to 3 in October.
Based on the amendments, programs and advertisements containing hate speech and calls to terrorism fall within the sphere of regulation of the Communications Regulatory Commission.
It will be possible to appeal the decision made by the broadcaster"s self-regulatory body on the mentioned violation to the Communications Regulatory Commission.
The draft law was authored and initiated by the Georgian Dream MPs: David Songhulashvili, Eka Sefashvili, Bezhan Tsakadze, Isko Dasen, Irakli Kirtskhalia, Anton Obolashvili and Irma Zavradashvili. According to the majority members, “the adoption of the draft law will contribute to the fulfillment of 12 priorities defined by the European Commission, on which the issue of granting candidate status to Georgia depends”.
