46 countries of the Council of Europe affirm the occupation of Georgia’s Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions by Russia - MFA

At the meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, another decision on “Conflict in Georgia” was made within the framework of the agenda item – “Council of Europe and conflict in Georgia”.

With this decision, 46 countries of the Council of Europe affirm the occupation of Georgia’s Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions by Russia and once again call on Russia, as the state exercising effective control over the occupied territories of Georgia, to ensure the protection of human rights and basic freedoms in the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region.

The Member States welcome the results of this year’s historic summit of the Council of Europe in Reykjavik, within the framework of which the leaders of the member states of the Council of Europe collectively called on Russia to fulfill its international obligations and to completely withdraw its forces from the territory of Georgia.

The decision draws attention to the judgments of international courts, including the European Court of Human Rights in January 2021 and the International Court of Human Rights in April 2023.

According to the decision of the Council of Europe, the member states condemn the humanitarian and human rights situation in the occupied territories of Georgia.

The Council of Europe and its 46 member states confirm once again their strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within the internationally recognized borders.
