Criminal prosecution of the current President is limited by legislation, immunity applies to the President - Shotadze

In connection with the case of the President’s visits abroad, the case concerns the violation of the Constitution, which is not the competence of the Prosecutor’s Office. Such a statement made today the Prosecutor General of Georgia.

“In this case, it is about violation of the Constitution. Violation of the Constitution is not the competence of the Prosecutor’s Office and is the competence of the Constitutional Court”, - said Irakli Shotadze.

To the journalist’s question whether there is any case related to Salome Zourabichvili that is currently under investigation and at what stage the investigation into the pardon case started in 2019, the Prosecutor General answered that investigation into the said case is still ongoing.

“I can confirm, that the investigation into this fact is ongoing. In general, I can tell you that criminal prosecution of the current President is limited by legislation. Immunity applies to the President and criminal prosecution against her is possible only in case of removal from office by impeachment, if the Constitutional Court has confirmed the fact of violation of the constitution or the fact of committing a criminal offense”, - added Irakli Shotadze.
