President of Georgia signs the Defence Code

The President signed the “Defence Code of Georgia” [DC]. David Tevzadze, the chief adviser to the President in matters of strategic planning, announced at a briefing.

“Salome Zourabichvili signed the DC, because despite the shortcomings, it fixes one of the well-known and important problems for the society. From now on, conscripts will undergo compulsory military service only in the defense forces, which is in line with the essence of military service and the country’s interest.

This will end the harmful practice that has been established for years, when young people had to go through compulsory service in various agencies, mainly in “public” booths.

In the same text, the issue of alternative service by clergy has been regulated to a certain extent, however, it is necessary to continue work regarding the military obligation, so that the desired principle of equality between denominations is taken into account.

It is also thought-provoking, especially in the light of the existing geopolitical challenges, that in the DC there was no place for the naval defense forces when considering the defense systems, and the solution of strategic and operational tasks in the maritime space is left to the hope of the maritime police.

And finally, the powers and activity rules of the National Defense Council, defined by the DC, do not correspond to the situation established by the Constitution, which is why the coordination between the National Security Council and the Defense Council, which is in operation today, is unclear, which can create significant problems in the management of the state of war”, - said David Tevzadze.
