NATO Parliamentary Assembly condemns the construction of a naval base by Russia in the occupied Abkhazia

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly adopted 3 declarations of support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia as well as the necessity of a “quick” implementation of the bloc’s tailored support package for the country.

At its 69th Annual Session in Copenhagen, the alliance approved the document highlighting Russia’s continued illegal occupation of the Abkhazia and South Ossetia/Tskhinvali regions of Georgia.

It also underlined Russia was demonstrating a “significant and direct threat” to the security of the alliance and to the peace and stability of the Euro-Atlantic region.

The Assembly condemned Russia’s reported plans to establish a naval military base in the city of Ochamchire in occupied Abkhazia, which it said posed a threat of future destabilisation in the Black Sea region.

It also said the bloc supported “rapid implementation” of the aid package created for Georgia"s needs, while continuing “active support” for the country’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations and its steps towards NATO membership.
