Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia held and led an Executive Government Meeting today. Members of the Cabinet of Ministers considered 8 agenda items, including a Draft Law of Georgia on Amendments to the Law of Georgia on General Education.

According to the proposed amendments, children turning 6 prior to December 1 will be able to be registered in the first grade starting from the academic year 2024-2025.

In addition, if parents wish, children turning 6 from the day immediately following the launch of the academic year through December 31 will have an additional opportunity to be registered in the first grade for the academic year 2025-2026.

According to the decision, by taking into consideration the readiness of the child and his/her best interests, individuals born any time from the day immediately following the launch of an academic year through December 1 will be able to make a choice in the academic year 2024-2025 whether to continue getting a pre-school and thus getting prepared for a general schooling or to get registered as first graders. This measure will be similarly applied to children born from September 16 through December 31 for the academic year 2025-2026.

As noted at the Executive Government Meeting, a decision has been made on the grounds of multiple requests made by citizens of the country towards a revision of the age when children are to start their schooling in Georgia.
