On the initiative of Georgian Dream, the rule and quorum for electing the Chairman, members of CEC are changing once again

On the initiative of the Georgian Dream, the rule and quorum for electing the Chairman of the Central Election Commission [CEC] and the so-called professional members are changing once again - a quorum of 3/5 votes will be needed for their election.

In order to elect the Chairman of the CEC and the so-called professional members, instead of 76 votes, by which according to the existing law they should be elected for a term of 5 years, 3/5 of the votes - 90 votes will be required. In the occasion that 90 votes cannot be secured, the election will be made with 76 votes.

According to the draft law, it will be possible to get support for specific candidates with 76 votes twice, and the candidates elected with 76 votes will start exercising their powers for a period of 5 years. In the occasion that not even 76 votes are collected, the issue will be referred to the President for decision.

The list of all the candidates participating in the contest will be sent to the President and the President will decide which candidate to appoint as the chairman of the CEC or to the vacant position of a member of the CEC.

The draft law will be adopted by the Parliament in an accelerated manner. It will be adopted in all 3 readings in September.
