A Government meeting was held today under the chairmanship of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. The Members of the Cabinet of Ministers discussed 22 meeting agenda topics.

Among others, the Government approved the 2023-2030 National Strategy for Transport and Logistics, and its 2023-2024 Action Plan, developed by the Ministry of Economy.

The strategy encompasses a long-term vision, goals, and objectives of transforming Georgia into a regional transport and logistics hub.

The document pays special attention to the empowerment of the logistics sector and improving the quality of logistics services, also ensuring the effective performance of the spheres of vehicle, railroad, and maritime transport and civil aviation, and enhancing the competitiveness of international transport routes. At the same time, the strategy seeks to develop human capital meeting labor market requirements and needs in the transport and logistics sector.

Alongside supporting freight transport, the development of passenger transport is also a priority. When discussing the document, it was underlined that improving the transport network and upgrading transport services and safety is of paramount importance for meeting mobility needs and bolstering Georgia’s tourism potential.

The strategy was developed by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development with support from the World Bank and in cooperation with the relevant state institutions. In addition, several rounds of public consultations were held, and most of the recommendations adopted based on said consultations were taken into account in the final version of the document.

Based on the Government’s decree, the Interagency Commission for the Development of the Transport and Logistics Fields of Georgia was also created and tasked with coordinating the implementation of measures defined by the strategy and the relevant action plan, also ensuring effective response to challenges in the field of transport.

When discussing the topic, it was noted that globalization and growing economic ties with the EU offer Georgia unique opportunities for fully integrating into international trade. Thus, the transport and logistics sector must play a decisive role in this process. It was also pointed out that, in this regard, special importance is attached to Georgia’s integration into the EU’s transport system, which envisages introducing European standards and upgrading transport ties.
