Varketili Metro station will not close during the reconstruction works. Such a statement made today the Mayor of Tbilisi at the municipal government meeting.

“The process of rehabilitation of Varketili metro station has been too long. The winning company “Mamison” could not and did not fulfill its contractual obligations. Accordingly, we had to dismiss it and now, the said works will be carried out by company “Bada Construction”.

When we embarked on the project, we stated at the government meeting that we would have to temporarily close the metro station. But today, I want to inform you that the rehabilitation will be carried out without closing the station. The total duration of the works is 18 months and according to the plan they should be completed next summer.

As part of the reconstruction, the work design has already been developed, the asbestos ceiling on the lower platform of the station has been completely dismantled; repairs to the sub-platform economic areas are underway.

A detailed scanning of the platform area has been carried out to finalize the design of the ceiling cladding. In the near future it is also planned to: dismantle the asbestos ceiling in the sloping escalator tunnel, dismantle the tiles on the platform floor, provide the screed and install the tiles envisaged by the project.

As I said, the works do not require the closure of the metro station, which will operate in a regular mode. In some areas there will be restrictions during the platform paving works. We will inform the society about this step by step”, - said Kakha Kaladze.
