We are doing everything to prevent evasion of sanctions through Georgia - Maka Bochorishvili

Georgia is doing everything to prevent the country from being used as a way to circumvent sanctions. Such a statement made the Chairwoman of the Committee on European Integration, while commenting with the visit of David O’Sullivan, EU Sanctions Envoy, to Georgia.

“The European Union has approved a new package of sanctions, which is mainly about blocking the routes through which sanctions are evaded. Therefore, the EU pays special attention to cooperation with third countries on these issues, and this is what the visit of the representative of the EU to Georgia serves, and not only to Georgia, so that the EU can have a dialogue with its partners, consultations on how to comply with the sanctions regime on the part of 3rd countries.

We know that Georgia has a very firmly defined policy, we do everything to ensure that the evasion of sanctions does not happen through Georgia, and Georgia has repeatedly received good evaluations precisely because of the steps taken by state agencies. Accordingly, we will continue to cooperate with the EU institutions.

No one talks about it [that Georgia is a black hole], Georgian politicians talk about it, if you don’t remember, I will remind you, even when the first package of sanctions was imposed, immediately one of the opposition members mentioned this word 5 times in one speech - black hole in Georgia. No one knew then what a black hole was. This is aimed at harming the country’s interests.

Threats exist in EU countries as well, and the facts of evasion of sanctions have been revealed in many places, therefore, the EU is trying to effectively enforce the sanctions that have been imposed. This is very logical and correct”, - said Maka Bochorishvili.
