86 against 3 - Parliament approves amendments to the Election Code without Lelo and UNM

86 against 3. Amendments to the Electoral Code have been approved. The draft was agreed with the opposition, which was reflected in the number of votes. The United National Movement and the Lelo party abstained from voting.

3 MPs - Tako Charkviani, Nato Chkheidze and Rostom Chkheidze - voted against.

As a result of reform, the proportional share in local self-government elections has been increased and a 40% threshold has been set for majoritarian elections.

The draft amendments envisage changes in the number of CEC members, the composition and the procedure for their election, the appointment of CEC members by parties and the termination of their term of office. The bill proposes a new rule for electing the CEC chairperson. The election administration will be mixed at all three levels - with 8 professional and 9 party-appointed members.

The bill envisages the restriction of the circle of persons entitled to participate in the pre-election campaign, prohibits the use of administrative resources.
