Aleko Elisashvili welcomes the Prime Minister’s decision regarding mandatory military service

The leader of the Citizens party, welcomes the Prime Minister’s decision regarding mandatory military service. According to Aleko Elisashvili, in order to strengthen the defense forces, it is necessary for all young people to undergo combat training.

“Finally, the Government woke up and realized that everything around us is changing and conscription must be mandatory. For months, I personally, as a member of the Defense and Security Committee of the Parliament, was involved in the development of this Code, and every time I asked the members of the Defense and Security Committee why it was stopped.

All young people who turn 18 will go and undergo several months of combat training only in the defense forces, only in the army. All of them will definitely undergo combat training at the battalion level”, - said Aleko Elisashvili.

The Prime Minister of Georgia said today that “all able-bodied males will undergo mandatory military service only within Defence Ministry.

“With six, eight, and eleven months of programme, an effective system will be produced. It will be intensive military instruction designed to develop a powerful reserve. The project, costing over 80 million GEL, will commence in January, but the program will go into effect starting January 1, 2025. Students under the age of 23 will be permitted to undergo compulsory military service one month per year at military facilities”, - said Irakli Garibashvili.
