The Parliament has adopted the draft of amendments to the constitutional law unanimously, with 126 votes, in the I reading.

The amendments provide for a new rule for electing the Prosecutor General - with a 90-vote quorum.

The constitutional changes were initiated by the Georgian Dream MPs.

According to the project, the Parliament of the next 2 convocations will elect the Prosecutor General with a three-fifths majority of the full composition.

If the legislature fails to elect the Prosecutor General twice with a three-fifths majority of the full composition, the Parliament elects the Prosecutor General with a majority of the full composition.

The term of office of the Prosecutor General, elected by the majority of the full membership, is one year.

According to the Georgian Dream MPs, the mentioned initiative serves “to fulfill Georgia’s commitment to the European Union and one of the conditions for granting the EU membership candidate status to Georgia”.
