Country’s security is important, but human rights are no less important and this limit should not be erased - Parliamentary Secretary of the President

We should agree on what the country needs in principle today - there should be no discussion about overcoming the veto or the number of votes. Such a statement made today Giorgi Mskhiladze, the Parliamentary Secretary of President.

“When the President exercised her constitutional right and vetoed the law, she justified that the veto was primarily based on political motives. Political veto does not mean that we wanted to veto - this meant exactly what was defined by the Venice Commission - during the adoption of the law, there was not enough discussion, there was not enough inclusiveness, relevant non-governmental organizations were not involved, and the law was adopted hastily.

The Venice Commission added a legal aspect to all of this - the period of surveillance is being extended with this law, and a person may not even know that s/he was being surveilled, and so on... When the Parliament considers the veto, we will talk in more detail.

I really hope that the majority will get well acquainted with the opinions of the Venice Commission and will make a decision after that”, - said Giorgi Mskhiladze.

The Venice Commission published its urgent opinion regarding the so-called wiretapping law, which was adopted by the Parliament of Georgia on June 7, 2022 and vetoed by the President, stating that “the draft law was adopted hastily and needs to be revised”.
