No sanctions were imposed on Russia after the August War, not even our then-Government imposed sanctions - Irakli Garibashvili

I would like to remind everyone that, unfortunately, no sanctions were imposed on Russia by the world leaders of that time after the August War - not even our then-Government imposed sanctions on Russia. Such a statement made the Prime Minister of Georgia at a joint press conference with his Polish counterpart.

“I want to recall President Kaczynski, who at that time loudly called on Western leaders to make firm and bold decisions regarding Georgia’s European integration. We have seen renewed policies towards Russia since the August War, new trade and economic projects, and no sanctions, unfortunately.

Moreover, unfortunately, even our then-Government did not impose sanctions on Russia, only diplomatic relations were cut. After the war, the then-Government sold strategic energy facilities to Russian companies, lifted the unilateral visa regime for Russian citizens and supported Russia’s membership in WTO, all after the war.

As a result, Georgia is still occupied, the status quo has not changed, we have to deal with the occupation on a daily basis, the challenge related to borderization, the kidnapping of our citizens and their temporary detention.

Unfortunately, we also have many tragic facts involving their killing or death. This is the reality that was created in our country after the August War. Consequently, we are well aware of how much tragedy is going on in Ukraine right now”, - said Irakli Garibashvili.
