Current version of the Constitution of Georgia is a continuation of the spirit of the 1st Constitution - Shalva Papuashvili

The Chairman of the Parliament congratulates the public on the day of the adoption of the first Constitution of Georgia.

“101 years ago, on February 21, 1921, when fierce fighting was taking place on the outskirts of Tbilisi, Georgia took a historic step - a firm step towards freedom and democracy. Against the backdrop of the greatest threat of Soviet occupation, the Constituent Assembly of the democratic republic of independent Georgia adopted the country’s 1st Constitution.

Georgia’s main law was one of the most progressive and human rights-oriented documents in the world. Although it lasted only a few days, it has laid a solid historical foundation for defining Georgia’s political system and foreign policy priorities.

It was this historical experience and legacy that made our country today have a Constitution based on the principles of the rule of law, protection of human rights and freedoms, and clear guarantees of the Georgian nation’s historic will to return to the European family.

The current version of the Constitution of Georgia is a continuation of the spirit of the first Constitution and is the foundation of a free, democratic, European Georgia”, - writes Shalva Papuashvili.
