Both the Georgian and Abkhazian languages need to be protected - Salome Zourabichvili

The President of Georgia congratulates the public on the Day of Abkhazian Language. According to Salome Zourabichvili, both the Georgian and Abkhazian languages need to be protected.

“The officially anti-Georgian and actually anti-Abkhazian policy has brought the Abkhazian language to the verge of extinction.

Today, anti-Georgian policy in Abkhazia is being carried out by actions such as banning teaching the Georgian language in Gali and prohibiting gaining education in the Georgian language.

Each late or untaken step to protect the Abkhazian language poses risks to its viability.

The status quo pushes us to search for innovative tools to save the Abkhazian language. Our fundamentally important aim is to protect our languages, and for this purpose, we must prove able to unite intellectual resources on both sides of the dividing line”, - writes Salome Zourabichvili.
