France calls on Georgian authorities to ensure that forthcoming local elections are in line with EU’s democratic values, norms and standards

A communiqué has been published on the official website of the President of France about the meeting between the President Emmanuel Macron and the President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili.

“France, which has stood by Georgia in the most difficult moments of its history, will continue to support it in maintaining stability and strengthening democracy. It reaffirms its commitment to the deeper establishment of fundamental rights in Georgia, namely freedom of the press and the strengthening of democratic and judicial institutions in line with the highest European standards.

France calls on the Georgian authorities to do its best to ensure that the forthcoming municipal elections are in line with the EU’s democratic values, norms and standards. France will pay special attention to any attempt aimed at destabilizing the democratic institutions of independent Georgia, directed against the aspirations of the Georgian people and the interests of the European Union.

The President of the French Republic will remain in close contact with the President of Georgia in order to continue working to strengthen ties between the two countries”, - reads the communiqué.
