Guram Tushishvili won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. In the final, he lost to Lukasz Krpalek (Czech Republic).

Georgian judoka joined the competition from the second round, where he convincingly defeated a representative of Tajikistan. In the quarterfinals, he defeated a member of the Brazilian national team, while in the semifinals – representative of Russia.
