Tomb of Georgian King Levan Bagrationi found in the Gremi Temple

The tomb of Georgian King Levan Bagrationi found in the Gremi Archangel Cathedral. The Tomb was found by the archeological expedition of the Georgian National Museum.

Levan Bagrationi reigned in the Kingdom of Kakheti for 54 years (1518-1574). Historical sources say that he was supposed to be buried in the complex of the Temple of the Archangels in Gremi, built by his efforts, but the specific location of the resting place was unknown.

Fragments and other specimens taken will be surveyed for final identification.

The archeological works are supported by the Georgian Patriarchate and the Diocese of Nekresi, the descendants of the Bagrationi family, as well as an initiative group composed of business circles working in the Kakheti region.
