General Prosecutor’s Office appeals to the Parliament in Nika Melia’s case

The General Prosecutor’s Office appealed to the Parliament on use of imprisonment as a measure of restraint for Nika Melia, Chairman of the United National Movement.

“Nika Melia failed to pay the bail in set terms. It is important to determine a relevant, stricter deterrent measure for a given case that, unlike bail, will be able to ensure the proper conduct of N. Melia.

Applying for an even higher amount of bail to the court is devoid of any legal basis - refusing to pay an increased amount of bail naturally raises the expectation that using an even larger amount of bail will not be considered a proportionate measure.

The only legislative alternative that can be considered as a stricter measure of restraint in the present case is imprisonment”, - reads the statement.
