We are changing the electoral system for self-government elections - Archil Talakvadze

We are changing the electoral system for self-government elections, said today the Chairman of the Parliament, while submitting a report to the legislature.

“I think the reforms that we have carried out will soon be assessed by the public in a broader context, according to how the parliament and the representation of the opposition parties perform their functions.

The Parliament will develop a package on electoral changes based on the OSCE / ODIHR recommendations’ conclusions and the observation mission recommendations. We are changing the electoral system for self-government elections, which will increase the number of members elected by proportional lists in the city councils. The principle of staffing election commissions will be changed, the rules prohibiting the use of administrative resources will be written, the perimeter of the polling station will be protected from influence, electronic means of controlling voting will be introduced, such as electronic ballot counters and fingerprint registration. It will be possible to recalculate at least 10% of the polling station results. As a result, we will hold local elections in an improved electoral environment and with improved legislation”, - said Archil Talakvadze.
