US to host Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict talks

The Trump administration is seeking to mediate a solution to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The news that Mike Pompeo, US secretary of state, will host the foreign ministers of warring Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington on Friday comes after Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden criticised the Trump administration’s “passive disengagement” from the crisis.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Pompeo said he would focus on sealing a cease fire, describing a “complicated situation on the ground”.

“Our view remains, as does the view of nearly every European country, that the right path forward is to cease the conflict - tell them to de-escalate, that every country should stay out, provide no fuel for this conflict, no weapon systems, no support”, - said Pompeo.
