Olaf Scholz expressed his opinion regarding the first point of Zelensky’s victory plan, which talks about inviting Ukraine to NATO. German Chancellor said that he is currently against inviting Ukraine to NATO because of the ongoing full-scale war started by Russia, and that the issue is not even on the agenda right now.
In an interview with ZDF, the politician noted that at the moment there is no need for “any new decisions” other than the decision on Ukraine’s prospects for joining the North Atlantic Alliance, adopted at the summits in Washington and Vilnius.
Scholz stressed that he “clearly expresses his position” on this issue and will not change it, even though inviting Ukraine to NATO is the first point of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s victory plan. The same applies to the issue of deliveries of German Taurus cruise missiles.
“A country that is at war cannot become a member of NATO. Everyone knows this, there is no disagreement about this. And NATO usually quite quickly links an invitation to membership. In the course of the ongoing war it is necessary to take balanced actions that should not only guarantee support for Ukraine, but also prevent a more global conflict – in particular, between Russia and NATO”, - said the Chancellor.
