Bangladesh riots - 24 burnt alive as mob sets hotel owned by Awami League leader on fire

At least 24 people, mostly boarders, were burnt alive at a hotel owned by a leader of Awami League party in Joshor district of Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled the country, news agency PTI quoted local journalists and sources in a report.

The hotel was set on fire around 4pm and the fire was doused at 8pm. Among the victims, there was an Indonesian citizen, reported local media house Prothom Alo. Some bodies were recovered from the liquor bar on the third floor of the hotel.

The Dhaka Tribune quoted the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Jessore General Hospital Dr Partho Pratim Chakraborty: “More than 150 patients were admitted to the hospital due to the fire incident”.

The incident happened on Monday evening as the mob set Zabir International Hotel owned by district Awami League general secretary Shahin Chakkladar on fire. All the victims were burnt alive.

As the news of Hasina’s departure spread, Dhaka and other parts of the country saw fresh rounds of violence. Mobs resorted to street violence, vandalising government property and even breaking into Hasina’s government residence and looting the interiors.
