Tbilisi City Court has sentenced 4 individuals to 5 years and 6 months in prison for psychological and physical abuse of Khanum Jeiranova, a woman found dead in 2014 in Sagarejo municipality.

The sentencing follows the highly publicized case following the death of Jeiranova, who suffered severe abuse from her husband’s relatives.

“The offenders had put Jeiranova in “degrading circumstances on the basis of her gender” and humiliated her in front of locals in a village of the municipality.

“Jeiranova was dragged out of a car and verbally and physically assaulted two days prior to her death, with the offenders also restricting her freedom. The actions of the members of the criminal group cased moral suffering to the victim, due to which she committed suicide on September 18, 2014.

Besides, another individual had been charged with illegal deprivation of liberty and humiliating treatment in the case, and would stand trial in Tbilisi City Court”, - reads the statement of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.
