Around 1,500 detained following storming of government buildings in Brazil

Around 1,500 Jair Bolsonaro supporters have been detained following the invasion of Brazil’s Congress, presidential palace and Supreme Court, writes Sky News.

It came as Mr Bolsonaro was admitted to hospital in Florida, where he flew after losing the country"s election in October, with abdominal pain.

Police began dismantling tents at a camp outside Brasilia’s army headquarters where Mr Bolsonaro supporters settled following the storming of the Capitol. The 1,200 individuals detained today, coupled with the 300 individuals detained on Sunday, brings the total up to 1,500.

Justice Minister Flavio Dino said during a press conference on Monday that two types of arrests will be made going forward: temporary arrests to deepen investigations and preventive arrests to ensure public order.

Rioters were seeking military intervention to either restore the far-right Mr Bolsonaro to power or oust the newly inaugurated leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known as Lula, who won the election with just 50.9% of the votes.

Heavily armed and mounted police were seen lining up in front of the camp on Monday, according to witnesses, with some protesters on their knees praying.
