Regulations on vehicle emissions tightened across Georgia starting January 1, 2023.

Starting this year, technical inspections will test emissions for the upper limit of 0.55% of carbon monoxide on idling engines, ahead of its further reduction to 0.5% in 2024 and 0.5/0.3% on idling and high idling speed modes respectively in 2025.

The gradual tightening of the regulations would ensure “full compliance with best international emission control practices” by 2025 and reduce environmental harm from vehicle emissions.

As part of another amendment scheduled to come into force starting February, the compulsory periodic technical inspection of vehicles will involve fees on repeat inspections, set at GEL 30 for owners of heavy cargo and passenger vehicles (involving categories M2, M3, N2 and N3), GEL 20 for light passenger (M1) and cargo (N1) vehicles as well as trailers (O3, O4), and GEL 15 for electric cars (M1).
