Irakli Garibashvili meets with Olivér Várhelyi

Georgian Prime Irakli Garibashvili, as part of his visit to Brussels, held a face-to-face meeting with Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement.

The European Council’s historic decision made in June on granting the European perspective to Georgia was pointed out during the meeting at the European Commission. According to the Prime Minister, this decision has laid the foundation for a new stage poised to lead Georgia to EU membership.

As the Prime Minister emphasized, Georgia shortly produced an action plan to fulfil the 12 priorities defined by the council. The working process ensures full engagement from the Parliament, the Government, opposition parties, and civil society.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that, as a result of Georgia’s fulfilling its obligations to the EU, the country will receive the candidate status.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that the updated Association Agenda will serve as the key basis of Georgia’s ambitious reform action plan in 2021-2027.

The conversation also touched on the importance of economic and sectoral integration into the EU, trade and other related issues.

Irakli Garibashvili thanked Olivér Várhelyi for his personal contribution to and support of the implementation of Georgia’s ambitious plan.

The region’s security situation was also discussed at the meeting, with the Prime Minister reiterating Georgia’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
