August 24 - Georgia’s Constitution Day

Today Georgia is celebrating the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of Georgia. On this day in 1995 officials signed the Constitution - the country’s basis of law. The Constitution replaced the Decree on State Power of November 1992 which had functioned as an interim basic law following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

The Constitution is the supreme law of Georgia and the country’s main document that outlines all laws.

27 years ago Georgia adopted the first Constitution, which established 3 branches of the Government: legislative, executive and judicial. Since then the Constitution has changed several times. During the Soviet era Georgia signed 5 Constitutions (in 1921, 1922, 1927, 1937 and in 1978).
