Office of Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons of Belgium responds to false information spread on their behalf by specific Georgian media outlets, political parties

The Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons of Belgium responds to the false information spread on behalf of the organisation by specific media outlets and political parties in Georgia.

In particular, on October 1, Netgazeti, TV Pirveli, as well as opposition parties Droa and Girchi, spread information concerning the upcoming elections on behalf of the Office of the General Commissioner for Refugees and Stateless Persons of Belgium.

“Currently circulating is a post distributed by the non-governmental organisation BelGeo [https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559839102804] that was later shared by the Netgazeti claiming that the CGRS would encourage people from the Georgian community to register to participate in Georgia"s parliamentary elections. This is incorrect. The CGRS will never distribute such information. The post shows a letter allegedly authored by the CGRS. The CGRS completely dissociates itself from the content of this message and underlines that the letter is a falsification. The CGRS will therefore consider what further legal steps can be taken.

CGRS completely dissociates itself from the content of the said letter and emphatically states that the letter is forged. Accordingly, the CGRS is considering taking appropriate legal measures”, - reads the statement.

The Droa party earlier said Georgian migrants residing in Belgium had asked the Office of the Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Person what would happen if illegal migrants participated in parliamentary elections and stood for consular registration, to which the organisation had allegedly responded that registration process was secret and they would have no problem.
