Georgia among top 50 countries for freedom of expression, top 10 with 11-year progress

Georgia has been named among the top 50 countries in the world in the 2023 Freedom of Expression Index, a ranking released in collaboration between the Global Change Data Laboratory research organisation and the University of Oxford.

The interactive report is based on a large-scale survey of the Varieties of Democracy Institute [V-Dem].

Georgia ranks 44th globally and is ahead of all neighbouring countries. The country also ranks first in the Black Sea region.

Georgia earned 84.9% on a 100% assessment system and was ahead of the 13 EU, NATO member states and all EU membership candidate countries and various high income countries such as Greece, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Turkey, Israel, South Korea, etc.

Georgia ranks 9th globally with 11 years of progress in the assessment of liberal democracy. In 2012, Georgia ranked 108th globally, and in 11 years its ranking position improved by 64 places.
