The Committee, at the offsite sitting in Akhmeta Municipality, discussed the Draft Law on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications of Goods; the initiative of the National Intellectual Property Center “Sakpatenti” aims at the development of the system of the appellation of origin and geographical indications, as well as the harmonization with the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications and the EU geographical indication system.
According to the Chair of the Committee, the geographic indication is an effective instrument serving for the competitiveness of the local and special goods related to the natural conditions and traditions and increase of awareness.
“The current edition of the Law is adopted in 1999 and fails to meet the modern challenges. Georgian unique product that has been generating for centuries countrywide how will be protected by the state according to higher standards, and what’s most important, the state is now to develop the system allowing the rural residents to have their unique craft and goods under competitive protection”, - said Nino Tsilosani.
The Draft is initiated by MPs Nino Tsilosani, Maka Botchorishvili, Khatia Tsilosani, Eka Sepashvili, Anton Obolashvili, Goderdzi Chankseliani, Gogi Meshveliani, Giorgi Tsagareishvili, Gela Samkharauli, David Songulashvili, Giorgi Kakhiani, Gocha Enukidze, Sozar Subari and Beka Odisharia.
